      105 ILCS 5/21-2c new
          Amends the  School  Code.   Requires  recognized  teacher
      training  institutions  to  offer  gender equity in education
      instruction to all students who  enter  an  approved  teacher
      education  program  after  July  1,  1998,  and requires each
      student  entering  such  a  program  after   that   date   to
      successfully  complete,  as  a  prerequisite  to receiving an
      early  childhood,  elementary,  special,   or   high   school
      certificate,  course  work  that includes the required gender
      equity   instruction.    Adds    procedures    relative    to
      implementation    of   the   gender   equity   in   education
      requirements.  Effective January 1, 1998.

 1        AN ACT to amend the School Code by adding Section 21-2c.
 2        Be it enacted by the People of  the  State  of  Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:
 4        Section  5.  The School Code is amended by adding Section
 5    21-2c as follows:
 6        (105 ILCS 5/21-2c new)
 7        Sec.  21-2c.  Gender  Equity.   Each  recognized  teacher
 8    training institution shall offer, to all students  who  enter
 9    an  approved  teacher  education  program on or after July 1,
10    1998,  instruction  relative  to  concepts,  principles,  and
11    applications of gender equity in education, and each  student
12    who  enters an approved teacher education program on or after
13    that date shall be required, as a prerequisite  to  receiving
14    an  early  childhood,  elementary,  special,  or  high school
15    certificate,  to  successfully  complete  course  work   that
16    includes  the  required  instruction in concepts, principles,
17    and applications of gender equity in  education.   The  State
18    Board  of  Education,  in consultation with the State Teacher
19    Certification Board, shall develop guidelines relative to (i)
20    the general nature of the gender equity instruction  required
21    to  be offered under this Section and (ii) the minimum amount
22    of course work that includes the  required  instruction  that
23    must  be  successfully  completed  by  students  to whom this
24    Section   applies.    Each   recognized   teacher    training
25    institution  shall  submit to the State Teacher Certification
26    Board its program for implementation of this Section.
27        Section  99.  Effective  date.   This  Act  takes  effect
28    January 1, 1998.
