Requires that each high school student, as a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma, must study 1/2 of one year of social studies devoted entirely to the study of State and local government in addition to other classes required as a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma. LRB9001442THpk LRB9001442THpk 1 AN ACT to amend the School Code by changing Section 2 27-22. 3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 4 represented in the General Assembly: 5 Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing 6 Section 27-22 as follows: 7 (105 ILCS 5/27-22) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22) 8 Sec. 27-22. Required high school courses. As a 9 prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma, each pupil 10 entering the 9th grade in 1984-1985 and subsequent years 11 must, in addition to other course requirements, successfully 12 complete the following courses: 13 1. three years of language arts; 14 2. two years of mathematics, one of which may be 15 related to computer technology; 16 3. one year of science; 17 4. two and 1/2 years of social studies, of which at 18 least one year must be history of the United States or a 19 combination of history of the United States and American 20 government and of which at least 1/2 of one year must be 21 devoted exclusively to the study of State and local 22 government; and 23 5. One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C) 24 foreign language, which shall be deemed to include 25 American Sign Language or (D) vocational education. 26 This amendatory Act of 1983 does not apply to pupils 27 entering the 9th grade in 1983-1984 school year and prior 28 school years or to students with disabilities whose course of 29 study is determined by an individualized education program. 30 The provisions of this Section are subject to the 31 provisions of Section 27-22.05. -2- LRB9001442THpk 1 (Source: P.A. 88-269; 89-397, eff. 8-20-95.)
