90_HB3797 105 ILCS 5/27-22 from Ch. 122, par. 27-22 Amends the School Code. For a pupil entering the 9th grade during the 1998-99 or a subsequent school year, increases to 4 years from 3 years (with respect to language arts) and to 3 years from 2 years (with respect to mathematics) the number of years of those subjects the pupil must successfully complete as a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma. Effective immediately. LRB9009375THpk LRB9009375THpk 1 AN ACT to amend the School Code by changing Section 2 27-22. 3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 4 represented in the General Assembly: 5 Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing 6 Section 27-22 as follows: 7 (105 ILCS 5/27-22) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22) 8 Sec. 27-22. Required high school courses. As a 9 prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma, each pupil 10 entering the 9th grade in 1998-19991984-1985and subsequent 11 years must, in addition to other course requirements, 12 successfully complete the following courses: 13 1. fourthreeyears of language arts; 14 2. threetwoyears of mathematics, one of which may 15 be related to computer technology; 16 3. one year of science; 17 4. two years of social studies, of which at least 18 one year must be history of the United States or a 19 combination of history of the United States and American 20 government; and 21 5. One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C) 22 foreign language, which shall be deemed to include 23 American Sign Language or (D) vocational education. 24 This amendatory Act of 19981983does not apply to pupils 25 entering the 9th grade in the 1997-19981983-1984school year 26 and prior school years or to students with disabilities whose 27 course of study is determined by an individualized education 28 program. 29 The provisions of this Section are subject to the 30 provisions of Section 27-22.05. 31 (Source: P.A. 88-269; 89-397, eff. 8-20-95.) -2- LRB9009375THpk 1 Section 99.
