 1                    AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 1475
 2        AMENDMENT NO.     .  Amend Senate Bill 1475  on  page  1,
 3    lines  2  and  6, by replacing "2-3.25g" each time it appears
 4    with "2-3.25g and adding Section 2-3.126"; and
 5    on page 5, by inserting below line 6 the following:
 6        "(105 ILCS 5/2-3.126 new)
 7        Sec. 2-3.126.  Class size reduction program.   The  State
 8    Board  of  Education  shall  develop and evaluate a statewide
 9    class size reduction schedule for grades kindergarten through
10    3, under which the  pupil-teacher  ratio  in  each  of  those
11    grades  in  each school district in which any or all of those
12    grades are maintained does not exceed or will be reduced to a
13    maximum of 20 pupils to one teacher per class.
14        The State Board of Education shall submit its  K-3  class
15    size reduction schedule, together with its evaluation thereof
16    and  recommendations for any legislation that may be required
17    to implement and administer  a  class  size  reduction  grant
18    program  for  those  grades,  to the Governor and the General
19    Assembly not later than October 1, 1998.
20        The State Board of Education also  shall  submit  to  the
21    Governor  and  the  General  Assembly, not later than the 2nd
22    Wednesday of January of each calendar year, an annual  budget

 1    request   for   all   amounts   necessary  to  implement  and
 2    administer, during the school year  that  commences  in  that
 3    calendar year, a statewide class size reduction grant program
 4    for grades kindergarten through 3.
 5        The  grant  program  to be implemented under this Section
 6    shall lapse when the maximum  20-to-one  pupil-teacher  ratio
 7    for  grades kindergarten through 3 is achieved on a statewide
 8    basis as provided in this Section.".
