Short description: 
CRIM CD-BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS                                                

Synopsis of Bill as introduced:
        Amends the Criminal Code of 1961 to add  the  Public  Safety  and      
   Recreational  Firearms  Use Protection Law to the Code.  Prohibits the      
   manufacture,  transfer,  and  possession  of   semiautomatic   assault      
   weapons.   Exempts the weapons if lawfully possessed under federal law      
   on September 13, 1994.   Exempts  certain  listed  firearms  as  those      
   firearms  were  manufactured  on  October  1,  1993.  Exempts manually      
   operated bolt, pump, lever,  or  slide  action  firearms;  permanently      
   inoperable   firearms;   and   antique   firearms.    Exempts  certain      
   semiautomatic rifles and shotguns.  Exempts from the  prohibition  the      
   transfer  to  or possession by a law enforcement officer employed by a      
   governmental unit  of  semiautomatic  assault  weapons  used  for  law      
   enforcement  purposes.   Establishes penalties.  Requires the Attorney      
   General to investigate and study the effect of these provisions and to      
   report his or her findings to the General Assembly and  the  Governor.      
   Sunsets the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Law      
   on Septmber 13, 2004.  Effective immediately.
