SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, According to new research from the United Nations,
3growing antimicrobial resistance linked to the discharge of
4drugs and some chemicals into the environment is one of the
5most worrying health threats today; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Studies have linked the misuse of antibiotics in
7humans and agriculture over the last several decades to
8increasing resistance, but the role of the environment and
9pollution has received little attention; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Clear evidence shows that antimicrobial compounds
11from households, hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities, and
12agricultural run-off released into the environment, combined
13with direct contact between natural bacterial communities and
14discharged resistant bacteria, is driving bacterial evolution
15and the emergence of more resistant strains; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Evidence shows that multi-drug resistant bacteria
17are prevalent in marine waters and sediments close to
18aquaculture, industrial, and municipal discharges; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Careless disposal of antibiotics could produce
20"ferocious superbugs" United Nations environment experts warn
21that have resistance to current antibiotics; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the U.S.
3Congress to review existing federal laws for the disposal of
4unused antibiotics and to pass new laws to prevent the creation
5of "superbugs" and to fund research into the treatment of, and
6creation of, new drugs to fight antibiotic resistant
7"superbugs"; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
9delivered to President Donald Trump, U.S. Senate Majority
10Leader Mitch McConnell, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck
11Schumer, U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, U.S. House of
12Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and all members
13of the Illinois Congressional Delegation.
