      55 ILCS 5/3-6001.5 new
          Amends   the   Counties   Code   to   establish   certain
      qualifications to be a candidate for the office of sheriff or
      to  be  elected  or  appointed  to  the  office  of  sheriff.
      Effective immediately.

 1        AN ACT to amend  the  Counties  Code  by  adding  Section
 2    3-6001.5.
 3        Be  it  enacted  by  the People of the State of Illinois,
 4    represented in the General Assembly:
 5        Section 5. The Counties Code is amended by adding Section
 6    3-6001.5 as follows:
 7        (55 ILCS 5/3-6001.5 new)
 8        Sec. 3-6001.5.   Sheriff  qualifications.   On  or  after
 9    December  1,  1997,  except  as  otherwise  provided  in this
10    Section, a person is not eligible to be a candidate  for  the
11    office  of  sheriff,  and  a  person  shall not be elected or
12    appointed to the office of sheriff, unless that person  meets
13    all of the following requirements:
14        (1)  Is a United States citizen.
15        (2)  Has  been  a resident of the county for at least one
16    year.
17        (3)  Is not a convicted felon.
18        (4)  Has submitted to a fingerprint and  criminal  record
19    background check.
20        (5)  Has  a high school diploma or its equivalent and has
21    a minimum of 2 years law enforcement experience in which  the
22    duties   were   related   to  the  enforcement  of  statutes,
23    ordinances, or  codes,  or  has  2  years  of  post-secondary
24    education  in  the  field of criminal justice, management, or
25    administration.
26        Section 99.  Effective date.  This Act takes effect  upon
27    becoming law.
