Amend Senate Bill 509, AS AMENDED, 3 in Section 5, in the introductory clause, by replacing 4 "Section 3-15012" with "Sections 3-7002, 3-7005, and 5 3-15012"; and 6 in Section 5, by inserting immediately below Sec. 3-6001.5 7 the following: 8 "(55 ILCS 5/3-7002) (from Ch. 34, par. 3-7002) 9 Sec. 3-7002. Cook County Sheriff's Merit Board. There is 10 created the Cook County Sheriff's Merit Board, hereinafter 11 called the Board, consisting of 5 members appointed by the 12 Sheriff with the advice and consent of the county board, 13 except that on and after the effective date of this 14 amendatory Act of 1997, the Sheriff may appoint 2 additional 15 members, with the advice and consent of the county board, at 16 his or her discretion. Of the members first appointed, one 17 shall serve until the third Monday in March, 1965 one until 18 the third Monday in March, 1967, and one until the third 19 Monday in March, 1969. Of the 2 additional members first 20 appointed under authority of this amendatory Act of 1991, one 21 shall serve until the third Monday in March, 1995, and one 22 until the third Monday in March, 1997. -2- LRB9000101MWksam 1 Upon the expiration of the terms of office of those first 2 appointed (including the 2 additional members first appointed 3 under authority of this amendatory Act of 1991), their 4 respective successors shall be appointed to hold office from 5 the third Monday in March of the year of their respective 6 appointments for a term of 6 years and until their successors 7 are appointed and qualified for a like term. As additional 8 members are appointed under authority of this amendatory Act 9 of 1997, their terms shall be set to be staggered 10 consistently with the terms of the existing Board members. No 11 more than 3 members of the Board shall be affiliated with the 12 same political party, except that as additional members are 13 appointed by the sheriff under authority of this amendatory 14 Act of 1997, the political affiliation of the Board shall be 15 such that no more than one-half of the members plus one 16 additional member may be affiliated with the same political 17 party. No, nor shall anymember shall have held or have 18 been a candidate for an elective public office within one 19 year preceding his or her appointment. 20 The Sheriff may deputize members of the Board. 21 (Source: P.A. 86-962; 86-1028; 87-534.) 22 (55 ILCS 5/3-7005) (from Ch. 34, par. 3-7005) 23 Sec. 3-7005. Meetings. As soon as practicable after the 24 members of the Board have been appointed, they shall meet, 25 upon the call of the Sheriff, and shall organize by selecting 26 a chairman and a secretary. The initial chairman and 27 secretary, and their successors, shall be selected by the 28 Board from among its members for a term of 2 years or for the 29 remainder of their term of office as a member of the Board, 30 whichever is the shorter. Forty percentTwo membersof the 31 Board shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of 32 business.
