1    AN ACT concerning local government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Local Governmental Employees Political
5Rights Act is amended by changing Section 12 as follows:
 
6    (50 ILCS 135/12)
7    Sec. 12. Elective and appointed office.
8    (a) A member of any fire department or fire protection
9district may:
10        (1) be a candidate for elective public office and serve
11    in that public office if elected;
12        (2) be appointed to any public office and serve in that
13    public office if appointed; and
14        (3) as long as the member is not in uniform and not on
15    duty, solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters
16    for the public office for which the member is a candidate.
17    (b) A firefighter who is elected to the Illinois General
18Assembly shall, upon written application to the employer, be
19granted a leave of absence without compensation during his or
20her term of office.
21    (c) A police officer or Sheriff's deputy may be a candidate
22for or appointed to serve in, and if elected or appointed serve
23in, the Illinois General Assembly. A police officer or

1Sheriff's deputy who is elected to the General Assembly shall,
2upon written application to the employer, be granted a leave of
3absence without compensation during his or her term of office.
4As long as the police officer or Sheriff's deputy is not in
5uniform and not on duty, he or she may solicit votes and
6campaign funds and challenge voters for the General Assembly
7office for which he or she is a candidate.
